We are including natural recipes and remedies for cats because, even though this is basically a dog website, we love ALL animals and if something on this website helps one dog, cat, person, etc. we would be thrilled.
Note: Please visit both Recipe sub-pages as most info can be applied for cats and dogs.

                            Feline Formula for Kidney Failure
Recipe taken from the book "Natural Pet Cures" by Dr. John Heinerman
The Tea Portion

1 pint of spring, purified or distilled water
1/4 t. stinging nettles
1/4 t. alfalfa
1/4 t. red raspberry
1/4 t. dandelion root/leaves
1/4 t. cornsilk
1/8 t. cleavers

Add the Concentrace drops to the water before boiling it.  Then the dandelion root and leaves.  Cover with a lid, reduce heat and simmer 4 minutes.  Set aside, remove lid and add rest of ingredients.  Cover and steep 30 minutes.  Note:  It is
better to use the crude, coarsely cut and dried herbs to make this tea than their powdered equivilents.  Strain and set aside.

The Nutritional Mix Part

1/8 t. bee pollen
1/8 t. powdered kelp
1/4 t. wheat grass
1/4 t. barley grass
1/4 t. cod liver oil
1/4 t. Rex Wheat Germ Oil
1/4 t. liquid lecithin

In a blender combine strained tea liquid and the other ingredients in their given order.  Run the blender for 2 minutes for 2 minutes with the lid securely locked in place.
Stop the unit and check the material; it should be rather runny.  If not, add a little more pure water until it becomes sufficiently liquefied.

Strain through a wire-mesh strainer or double layered cheesecloth.  Store in a dark amber bottle in the refrigerator.  Shake well before using each time as contents are apt to separate or settle.  Pour into a clean cup only that amount to be used for the day and return the rest to the refrigerator.  Allow the liquid to set at room temperature for a while until it becomes lukewarm.

Using as syringe or turkey baster, fill with a little of the liquid (no more than 3/4 teaspoon at a time) and insert in the cat's mouth.  Repeat twice daily, morning and evening.

Directions for administering medicine to a cat.  Take the cat by the scruff of its neck and hold the head back.  The mouth automatically opens (in most instances) and you can squeeze the liquid in that way without getting  scratched or bitten. If the mouth doesn't open all the way, there will be enough of a space at the corners into which a dropper can be put and the fluids squirted out.

Another note from the same book: Taurine and potassium are also critical nutrients for felines with kidney problems. Fish protein is high in this sulfur-bearing amino acid (sardines and mackerel are good sources).  Banana is high in potassium: Liquefy 1/4 peeled banana with 2/3 tablespoons of mineral water in a blender and give to cat same way as you would any other formula.

                                                          Yam Puree
( For toofless puddytats- from the book Natural Pet Cures)

This recipe was originally in the Goldstein's booklet, Super Foods and Healing Meals for Pets, it appears in Natural Pet Cures, Dr.  Susan Goldstein wrote how her yam puree came about.  "This concoction was created out of desperation for a woman who came to me in tears because her cat was missing all its teeth and could not tolerate solid foods or even canned foods.  At the time, organic baby food was not an option.  Here's what I came up with.  Now it's a regular favorite."

4 large sweet potatoes, cooked
2 raw egg yolks
2 T. low fat plain yogurt
1 t. bee pollen

Bake or steam the yams until soft.  Leave the skins on.  Blend in a Vita-Mix 5000 at low speed until smooth.  Mix in the egg yolks, yogurt and bee pollen.  Serve alone or over natural base food as a topping.

                                                          Tuna Treats
                                               (makes approximately 60 treats-cats)

1/2 c. whole wheat flour
1/2 c. nonfat, dry powdered milk
1/2 can tuna (in oil) or 1/2 c. cooked chicken, chopped into
small pieces
1 T. vegetable oil or cod liver oil
1 egg, beaten
1/4 c. water
catnip (optional)

Preheat oven to 350° and grease cookie sheets with cook-
ing spray.  In large bowl, mash the tuna (or chicken) into smaller pieces.  Then add flour and milk.  Mix well.  After all is
mixed, pour in water and oil.  Mix well, again.  Next, beat egg in separate dish until egg gets a foamy texture.  Add to mix;
mix well.  The dough mix will be sticky, so don't worry.  Using your fingers, shape dough into small bite-size balls, about the
size of a marble.  Put balls on greased cookie sheets.  Flatten balls with hand.  Bake for 10 minutes.  Remove treats from oven.  Wait 5 minutes and turn over so other side will cook.  Bake 10 more minutes or until golden brown in color.  Place treats on cookie rack to cool.  Cool for 15 minutes.
